Today was the BEST bike to work day! Over 60 business hosts, many of them providing free breakfast, coffee, juices and swag just for saying thank you to those biking to work here in Fort Collins. Special thanks to the awesome staff of the FC Bikes Program with the City of Fort Collins for their commitment to support a vibrant bike culture!
My day started at the mothership of all things awesome for those who bike ~ New Belgium Brewery. Free beermosas, pizza bagles, scrambled eggs, and great company with an unofficial count of at least 300 people hanging out at the Liquid Center.
Next stop, Oak Street Plaza. Elevation Credit Union, The Cupboard, the City of Fort Collins, and other resource providers handed out free bike bells, prizes like wildflower seed mix, and absolutely delicious coconut iced coffee! The Rio Grande Restaurant always has fantastic breakfast burritos and today was no exception!
From 4 – 7 p.m. both New Belgium Brewery and Odell’s Brewery kept the momentum moving with free beer, contests, live music, and the chance to win bikes! Odell’s was my first stop ~ if you ride your bike, free beer! A VERY popular place to be!
Next and final stop of the day, it’s only appropriate to end where my day began at NBB.
I tested my bike riding and strategic pitching skills at a light hearted, fun mini-course ~ the paperboy challenge. The goal: successfully land newspapers in a variety of spots including a mailbox! I have a whole new appreciation for the lost skill and cultural phenomenon of newspaper tossing in a strategic spot. Now I understand why so many newspapers ended up in the bushes, on rooftops, or anywhere else other than a doorstep!
The climax of Bike to Work day at NBB was the awarding of a custom built Detroit Cruiser bike. One lucky dude held the winning ticket and so, the day celebrating bike commuting ended on an especially celebratory note with one more person getting one more bike to add to the thousands of people in FoCo who bike commute!
Ride and smile!
